The NSMBA, est.1997
In the early 90’s, mountain bikers started building loam lines and wooden structures in the rough terrain of the North Shore Mountains. By 1997 with the future of the trails in question, a handful of these trail pioneers came together and formed the North Shore Mountain Bike Association. The idea was simple: form a united front in the to ensure mountain bikes had access to the trails on Vancouver’s North Shore in perpetuity. 20 years later, we carry on this tradition, and proudly help maintain a network of over 70km of trails, providing fun and recreation to an ever growing community of trail users and working to maintain the legacy and legend of Vancouver’s North Shore.
Giving our trails a voice for 20 years
We can debate whether or not mountain biking was born in California or Colorado, but the North Shore is where it came of age. We owe our existing trail network to the dedication, perserverence, and ingenuity of the early trail builders and riders. Today, wooden structures like the ones pioneered here on our mountains are seen the world over, and ‘the Shore’ drove changes in mountain biking across the globe. These legendary lines and structures are the reason our home is world renowned, and we a the NSMBA consider ourselves fortuante to be the stewards of these trails.
As a volunteer, Not-for-Profit charity organization, our work includes continued maintenance and revitalization of this trail network; adapting trails to sustainable trail standards and improving connectivity through new trail projects. We develop trail networks that provide challenge and progression while fostering our mountain bike culture and community that embraces our sport as a positive force. Doing so is hard work and the increasing trail use requires more hours than ever to keep up with wear and tear, trail erosion, storm damage and the ravages of time.
Strength in numbers
Many things have changed since our founding 20 years ago, some things have not. As a not-for-profit, volunteer organisation we could not function without the support of our members, friends, sponsors and donors. Over the years we have grown from a handful of people to a community with over 1200 members, all dedicated to giving back to the trails we all enjoy. Every single membership counts as it not only helps fund trail work, but gives us the necessary voice when talking to landowners, governments, sponsors, and the greater community.
Our Goal is to raise $50,000 for the trails! This legacy fund will ensure that we can continue to fund future projects, advocate for the trails and be around for years to come!
