2nd Oilcan
Trailday June 11, 2006 |
I couldn't make to this trailday so the narration will be a bit weak... weaker than usual, in fact. It appears as though lots of great work was done in getting Oilcan back into a rideable state. To recap, the vision for Oilcan is to smooth it out, fix the severe drainage issues, and turn it into a nice intermediate trail to take some pressure off of Pipeline. The first trailday concentrated on the first third of the trail, and this last trailday worked on the middle third.
On Top bike shop sponsored the day, once again giving the love back to the people and trails that put the food on their table. They're committed to sponsoring the remaining trail day later in the summer as well.
Much of the work was relines so the "before" shots would just be shots of the rainforest. Here's a section that the rock-meister Pete Morin worked on. This is Pete, himself, passing on the knowledge.

Here's a re-line section. A drainage trench was dug to keep the water off of the trail. Some cribbing was installed to contain the armouring, then the entire corner was armoured.. | |

On this section the original line was to go right around the base of that log. Mark found a line that was way better as a X coutry line that continued straight about 50 metres and dog legged below to meet up about 50 metres before the wooden structure over the 5 fallen trees.

Here is Dan from On Top flipping burgers to keep the builders fed and happy. Huge props to Dan and the rest of the On Top crew for setting up, cooking, cleaning up, and providing food. As always, when you're about to spend money in a bike shop, remember which shops support the NSMBA and trail days.

Thanks everyone who came out and gave back to the mountain. Your hard work is really appreciated by riders, hikers, the NSMBA, the District of North Vancouver, and many others. See you at another trail day!
