" A 43-year-old Ontario man has been killed while travelling in Mexico, friends of the man confirmed Monday.
Kenneth Charles Peter Klowak of Orangeville died suddenly on Wednesday, according to an online obituary.
According to the Mexican magazine Proceso, Klowak was shot twice by a group of armed men in the town of Allende in the state of Coahuila.
Klowak was reportedly driving with a group in a gold Chevrolet Suburban on a highway between Piedras Negras, along the Texas-Mexico border, and Muzquiz when gunmen intercepted them.
When Klowak's group refused to stop, the gunmen pursued and shot at them, the magazine reported.
A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade would say only that the department is "aware of the death of a Canadian citizen in the region of Piedras Negras" but would not confirm his identity.
A second Canadian citizen who was part of the group was reported unharmed, said spokesperson Alain Cacchione.
Friends tell CBC News that Klowak was an avid downhill mountain biker.
The online obituary asks that memorial donations be made to the North Shore Mountain Bike Association, a North Vancouver-based organization that supports the preservation of mountain biking trails.
